Tips For A Healthy Smile In 2021!

We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with your family and loved ones! Now that we’re moving into the New Year, we want to make sure that your oral health stays on the right track. Our team of dental professionals have put together some tips to keep your smile bright and healthy throughout 2021.

Brush Regularly And Correctly

You should brush your teeth at least twice a day. Make sure to use a high quality toothbrush, preferably an electric one. If you do use a manual brush, choose one with soft bristles, as harsh bristles can harm your gums and even wear enamel.

Use only a pea-sized piece of toothpaste and brush each quarter of your mouth for thirty seconds. Be sure to brush with a gentle, circular motion and brush into the gumline. Also, hygienists now recommend that you brush your teeth before breakfast or thirty to sixty minutes after eating so that you don’t brush acid into your teeth, weakening enamel.

Floss At Least Daily

You should floss your teeth at least once a day. Consider flossing twice, especially if you have had problems with your gums. For those who can’t tolerate flossing, an oral irrigator or “water flosser” is a good alternative.

Make sure to use fresh floss between each pair of teeth and to work the floss up and down until all particles are removed. Pay special attention to areas you know you tend to build up tartar. This is often between the bottom front teeth.

Drink Plenty of Water

Just like the rest of your body, your mouth and teeth benefit from proper hydration. Be sure to drink water whenever you are thirsty. Fluoridated tap water is better (unless you have fluoride sensitivity). Avoid acidic or sugary drinks except as an occasional treat, as they can take a major toll on your teeth.

Visit Your Dentist When You Need To

Healthy adults should get a professional cleaning every six months and an exam every year. Regular exams help catch dental problems before they become more serious. Routine cleanings are the best way to prevent periodontal disease.

You should also get X-rays as recommended, not only to monitor your teeth but as screening for oral cancer. Don’t neglect dental visits. Your dentist knows how to take the appropriate public health measures to keep you safe.
